18 year old producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mura Masa is making some serious musical moves at the moment. He has a fifteen track mixtape called “Soundtrack to a Death” dropping November 17 and in anticipation of that he just dropped these two wicked tracks onto his Soundcloud. MM’s music mixes traditional vinyl beatmaking with a more electronic approach to great effect. This kid is definitely going places and I can’t wait for the project to drop.

Jenova 7 – Theme For A Goodbye
Just came across this track while cruising the good ol’ internet. It’s by Jenova 7 who is a beat- and filmmaker from Boston, MA. I like the cinematic feel of this instrumental with it’s dramatic horns, boom bap drums and atmospheric strings. The track is featured on “IWYMI” – a monthly compilation of instrumental hip hop put out by Los Angeles-label Cold Busted to showcase various beat makers and producers from around the world.
The label also puts out a series called “In Dub” and they recently released their third installment. This compilation also features two tracks from Jenova 7 and my favorite one is “Transmission Dub”. Check out that one below as well.
Mura Masa – Over-Love
IAMNOBODI – Inspiration/Motivation
I’m playing a little catch up with the posts since I’ve had a busy couple of weeks. Our good friend, IAMNOBODI, unleashed this banger on the public about a week ago. It’s a synth heavy affair that goes by the name of “Inspiration/Motivation”. The track has some nice heavy drums and percussion as well some interesting melodic patterns working over smooth chords. It’s a bit different from what were used to from IAMNOBODI, but as usual he keeps things interesting.
Tall Black Guy – Sade’s Taboo (Sweetest Taboo Blap-Up)
British producer, Star Slinger, recently hit us with a very effective reworking of “Smooth Operator”, the classic 80´s track by iconic British singer Sade. Now Detroit-based producer, Tall Black Guy, serves up another treat inspired by the Soul Goddess. He reinterprets her song “Sweetest Taboo” turning the classic soul tune into a great little hip hop-inflected downtempo gem.
Terry Tester – Falling/Denice
BusCrates 16-Bit Ensemble – Fractions
Buscrates 16-Bit Ensemble – Cut Out The Lights (Funkee Drummer)
Buscrates is a skilled and quite prolific producer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The last few years he’s been making some waves on the underground circuit with several excellent productions doing everything from boom bap hip hop to boogie funk. Besides being a solo artist he’s also a member of the Pittsburgh group E.L.Q. (East Liberty Quarters) and the music collective Futuristic Soul Society.
On the above track he flexes his skills and inventiveness as a beat maker flipping one the most sampled breaks of all time: “Funky Drummer” by the one and only James Brown. Buscrates succeeds in putting a fresh and surprisingly mellow spin on the break lacing it with some smooth chords and nice synth work to create the trademark Buscrates vibe. It’s a testament to his creativity that he’s able to bring something original to this well-worn breakbeat.
